The Barossa based distillery, have elevated their ‘world’s best’ Barossa Shiraz Gin to new heights releasing a Barrel Aged Barossa Shiraz Gin blend that’s spent more than 12 months in French Oak. The result, a dark and moody gin that captures the essence of the Barossa and redefines the interpretation of ‘gin and juice’.
“After the global success of the ‘21 Barossa Shiraz Gin (99 points at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London) we knew we were on to something good,” said owner, Jon Durdin.
“And with a family history in barrel making (Cooperage) spanning more than 130 years, it’s fair to say we can access some pretty special barrels.
“We selected a beautiful French Oak barrel and let it work its magic with our world winning Shiraz gin inside. Fast forward nearly two years, and we’re left with a gin that transcends boundaries and walks a line between gin and fortified wine.
“This release is living proof that great drops do get better with age”.
The special release Barrel Aged Barossa Shiraz Gin has been crafted with premium Barossa Shiraz grapes steeped in Seppeltsfield Rd Distillers signature House Gin, pressed, and aged in French oak for more than 12 months. The Seppeltsfield Rd Distillers crew have done their due diligence tasting the gin, making sure it’s ripe for release, describing it as dark, smooth and moreish with flavours of dark chocolate, Turkish delight and a hint of oak.
Seppeltsfield Rd Distillers have been producing Barossa Shiraz Gin since 2019, during which time they’ve developed a reputation for their signature Shiraz Gin, which is largely a result of their craftmanship, quality gin and access to premium Barossa grapes.
Their world- class Shiraz Gin is crafted from whole berry Shiraz grapes (from the Barossa’s Western Ridge) steeped in over-proof House Gin and left to for 12 weeks to allow the juice colour and tannin structure to extract into the gin creating a bright, beautifully balanced, sweet, luscious and velvety smooth gin.
Seppeltsfield Rd Distillers Barrel Aged Barossa Shiraz Gin is available for purchase online or at Seppeltsfield Rd Distillers tasting room + distillery (436 Seppeltsfield Rd, Marananga). RRP $130 | 500ml.
A total of 85, predominantly UK based, judges evaluated over 4,000 entrants across a dozen major categories for the 2022 International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC). The results have just been announced.
In the gin category, historically one of the competition’s largest segments, a total of 22 gins were awarded the coveted Gold Outstanding medal. The winners ranged from all over the world.
The IWSC is an annual wine and spirits competition. Founded in 1969, by Anton Massel, it has grown to become one of the largest such competitions in the world. Spirits are evaluated on a 100-point scale and awards are given out for Gold Outstanding (98-100 points), Gold (95-97 points), Silver (90-94 points) and Bronze (85-89 points).
Four gins were awarded scores of 99 points. Seppeltsfield Road Distillers Barossa Shiraz 2021 Gin and Botanic Australis Navy Strength Gin are both Australian gins. The Barossa Shiraz gin is a gin that is made by macerating Shiraz grapes from each vintage in the house gin. Once the grapes have been macerated, they are crushed, filtered and bottled at 38.5% ABV. The gin is produced by Seppeltsfield Road Distillers. The judging panel described the gins:
A gorgeous grape aroma with dried fruits, pine and chocolate notes. The wine blends well as part of the gin and the flavour is sensational. Great silky texture with well-integrated alcoholic warmth and a finish that pleasantly lingers.
Seppeltsfield Road Distillers also took a Gold Outstanding medal for its Musician’s Cut Gin. The Judging panel described the gin as:
Punchy pine on the nose, with beautiful vibrant citrus. Complex aromas of grapefruit peel, sherbet and delicate florals add to the flavour profile. Spices arrive on the palate and grip the taste buds along with rich spice.
